Now it’s time to go over to Lisa and Chanel to find out more about modal verbs. Hi guys, thanks friend. As this week’s topic is about Africa… hello from south Africa! this week we’re looking at modal verbs. Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs and they express ability, requests possibility, probability, obligation and necessity. The main modal verbs are can, could, may, might, must, shall, will and would. Let’s look at some examples:
- possibility or probability: judging by these clouds. It looks like it might rain today
- obligation: I must tidy my room
- request: can you help me?
- and ability: I can eat snacks all day
